Dear curls, you are loved.

For those of you who have curly hair, you already know what it is. It’s tears, frustration, love, obsession, time, and, of course, mixed reactions to your hair from those near and far. My journey to healthy curls started 2 years ago and, let me be honest here, it has been a battle. But it is one that has opened my eyes far beyond just hair.  I have learned strength, patience, and most of all, discipline. Yes, you read that correctly. My hair has taught me discipline. It takes a certain amount of consistency to keep curls alive and well.

There are tricks to the trade.

With more people embracing their beautiful kinks, curls and coils, there has to be something we can do to ensure they are properly taken care of, right? The answer to that question is, you are so right! There is so much information out there in the world on what to do for this curl type or that curl type, and there are so many products out there for everyone. My favorite go-to curl product? SheaMoisture by far.

Once you find the products that work best for your hair, Walmart is a great place to stock up on all the products your heart desires! Of course, y’all know I always head straight for the hair section in most stores, and Walmart is no exception. I love the variety and amount of natural hair products they have, and it’s a great place to experiment with buying and trying different products!

When I first started on my journey, I didn’t even know where to start. It felt like I was swimming in a sea of information. So of course, after some trial and error, I was able to compile my own list of some of my tips and tricks that I personally utilize to keep my curls healthy.

So, let’s get right into it.

Here are my 5 tips for maintaining healthy, moisturized curls.

1. Less Manipulation:

I realize how this sounds, but in some cases, it’s necessary. When I started my transition from severe heat damage, I was trying a lot of different hair styles. Twist outs, braids and wash n go’s every 3 days. I was experimenting with my own hair but in all honesty, I wasn’t even familiar with my hair.

Ultimately, I decided doing less was more. Instead of doing wash n go’s 3 times a week, I started to do them once every 2 weeks. Sometimes, even longer. From this, I was able to see my hair grow and my curls had the chance to just be.

  2. Deep Condition/Use Hair Masques:

I like to think about my hair as a plant. When I water it, it’s happy. Deep conditioning your curls each wash day can work wonders for moisturizing your curls. I’ll admit, I’m not perfect. I do get lazy sometimes and I neglect this tip, but I try to make it a point to deep condition as often as my hair requires. One of my personal favorites is SheaMoisture’s Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque. I’ve been using this masque for over 2 years now for it’s healing and restoring purposes, and since then I’ve gone back to it time and time again.

3. Wear a Satin Bonnet, Satin Hair Wrap, or Use a Satin Pillowcase:

Curls are sensitive little things. They snag and get tangled like no other. Maybe even more than the earphones in your bag. Protect your curls at all costs! Not all bonnets, hair wraps and pillowcases are alike. Some cause more friction than others, leaving your poor curls crying for help. Do them a favor and please protect them with a satin hair product.

  4. Use Moisturizing Hair Products:

Curls need all the moisture, I’m talking a lot of it. My hair can soak up water like it was never there. Make sure you’re using products with water as one of the first ingredients. Take a look at your bottle of conditioner; if water is nowhere to be found, it might be time to reevaluate. What I love about the SheaMoisture’s Raw Shea Butter line is water is a reliable ingredient. My hair needs a lot of water so this line is one that I know I can count on for moisture.

  5. Detangle Thoroughly:

If there is one tip that can save you hours on wash day, it’s this one. Please detangle your curls thoroughly. This will save your hair a lot of snagging, pulling and breakage in the future. I’ve been in a place where I didn’t take my time detangling my hair and I felt the effects of that decision during the next wash day. To say the least, it wasn’t fun.

To help with the detangling process, use as much conditioner as your hair needs for each curl to be evenly coated. I have a lot of hair, so it takes countless pumps of conditioner for me to achieve my goal of thoroughly detangled hair. The Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner works wonders for detangling. The best part is, it can also be used as a leave-in conditioner as well. I love it!

Curls come in all shapes, colors, and sizes, so let’s all celebrate our curls by taking care of them.
