Coastal is an online eyewear retailer that carries a huge variety of styles in both eyeglasses and sunglasses. They carry both designer and exclusively designed frames, and there’s so much to choose from!

Nerd, Four Eyes… Dope Fashion Kween?

Glasses as an accessory have had quite the journey during our lifetime. They’ve gone from something stigmatized, to a stylish way to accessorize your face. So, we thought we would talk about both of our individual experiences as glasses-wearers, and how glasses have shaped our confidence!

Hannah’s Experience:

Honestly, I’ve always thought glasses were the coolest. When I was in elementary school, I went to the eye doctor hoping that I would get a prescription so I could pick out my own pair of frames in my favorite color. But alas, I had 20/20 vision for my entire childhood.

That changed when I was around fifteen. To be fair, I still had 20/20 vision, I was just straining my eyes. But still, eye strain = prescription glasses! Finally, my childhood dreams were becoming a reality. This was before the wearing-glasses-for-style movement happened, so this was a moment for me.

I picked out the coolest oval “grandpa” frames I could find.

I’ve always liked vintage-style frames, so I snatched up an awesome pair of gray tortoiseshell and silver oval frames. I loved them and wore them until I was a freshman in college, and needed an actual prescription.

When I got my new prescription, I couldn’t find anything I liked.

I settled on a plastic rectangular pair, but when I lost my favorite frames, I lost part of what I loved about wearing glasses. I wish I had known about Coastal back then!

Coastal has frames for every style, and they have so many cute vintage-style frames for me to add to my collection. Their amazing selection of frames have allowed me to fall back in love with wearing glasses!

I’m obsessed with both my eyeglasses and sunglasses from Coastal.

I will also say that prescription sunglasses have changed my life entirely. This is my first pair of prescription sunglasses, and they are literally the best thing to ever happen to my eyes. Who knew the world was so crisp and visible?

Another thing Ariana and I both love about Coastal is their Buy One, Give One initiative. Basically, every time you buy a pair of frames from Coastal, they donate a pair of prescription glasses to someone who needs them. We love a charitable queen!

It’s so easy to order from Coastal.

You can input all of your prescription information and save it under your profile, so every time you want more frames you can just select your prescription and order. This also makes it easy for people like me who have not one, but two different prescriptions. That way, I can choose which frames I want for reading and which ones I want for distance without inputting my information all over again!

But anyways, that’s my experience with glasses. It’s pretty simple: I’ve always loved them, and always will! Now, here’s Ariana’s side of the story.

Ariana’s Experience:

I have had a LONG history with wearing glasses. It started when I was about nine years old. I did the classic vision test at the eye doctor, and it turned out that I needed glasses for reading. Being the extremely shy kid that I was, I didn’t want to draw attention to myself. I remember thinking how uncool it was that I was the only one in my friend group who needed glasses.

Let’s move along, shall we?

Next, I was directed to the kids section of the glasses options, and they were all hideous. I may have been nine years old, but I knew hideous when I saw it. Most of the options had plastic bright colored frames or too mature looking wire frames. Personally, I couldn’t relate to any of the styles at that time, but I picked a pair of wire frames because I thought they were less bold than the brightly colored glasses.

I went home feeling embarrassed. I kept thinking about what my friends and classmates would think of me when I had to take out a pair of glasses to read. So I defied the instructions of the eye doctor and I didn’t wear them unless I was at home. Soon after, I stopped wearing my glasses altogether (I do not recommend this guys! please, wear your glasses.)

My view of glasses has changed a lot since my first encounter at nine years old.

I went the rest of my elementary  school years without wearing glasses, because I didn’t believe I truly needed them. My views changed once I entered middle school. I was given a vision test from the school nurse, who told me: “Wow, your vision is terrible.” Who says that to a thirteen year old? Anyway, I was again confronted with the fact that I needed to wear glasses. I went home and told my parents what the nurse said. So they brought me to get another vision test. It was this test that changed how I thought about glasses.

I got another pair of glasses that I didn’t like, but I tried to wear them more to build my confidence. A couple of years later, I got the usual vision test and was told that I now needed to wear glasses all of the time, not just for reading. I was sixteen, old enough to know the importance of wearing glasses, so I picked out a pair of glasses that I thought were so cool at the time. These were the first pair of glasses that made me feel cool, even confident, so I wore them everyday.

The right pair of glasses can make all the difference.

Though I struggled a lot initially with needing glasses, I now love my glasses. I see my glasses as another way to express myself and accentuate my style, so I’m constantly growing my collection of frames. That’s why I love Coastal! Coastal not only has a wide range of glasses in many styles, but they’re affordable enough for me to keep building my collection. Wow, imagine my nine year old self seeing me now!

Wearing glasses has become an accessory must have!

Once I discovered which style of glasses made me feel the most confident, I wanted way more than just one pair. You don’t just buy one pair of shoes or one necklace, right? You buy more! I decided that I wanted options, so I made it a point to start building my collection of prescription glasses. For every mood I woke up in, I wanted a pair of frames to match.

Glasses confidence is a thing, and it’s one of those things that takes time and experimentation to acquire. I’ve tried all sorts of frames and colors to find what worked for me. And no matter how I’m feeling, I know that I can count on affordable frames from Coastal to keep things fresh and fun!

  1. Love these frames! I went and got laser eye surgery, not because I dislike glasses but because my vision was so bad and I was tired of waking up and not being able to see. I might have to check Coastal out. Thanks for sharing!
