If you guys haven’t noticed, It’s Pride month!
We do realize that we are a tiny bit, or maybe a lot a bit late with mentioning this on our blog. We don’t have any excuses, except one: we simply forgot. We didn’t forget about Pride month itself, we just forgot to chime in a bit on here. But we have been having a Pride blast on our Instagram! Considering it’s one of the most loving and colorful months of the year, we thought we would talk a little about what Pride actually means to us.
Pride can mean so many things to so many people.
Before we jump into what Pride actually means to us, we thought it would be a good time to mention that this is our first time celebrating Pride month. Not because we never wanted to or because we didn’t know it exists, but we just never had much of an opportunity. The year that we met, we had some distance in between us around Pride month, so there goes our first Pride together (it was non-existent.) Rewind to last year, we didn’t even realize it was Pride month until it was nearly over. We had just moved into our current apartment in May of last year and things were all over the place – like, girl. Anyways, that brings us here, to 2018. We were available and present, and for the very first time, we got to witness what Pride month looks and feels like.
Throughout this month, we keep hearing one question.
What does Pride mean to you? Honestly, we never really thought about it. At this point, I’m sure some of you may be asking yourselves, “you’re lesbians, how have you never thought about what Pride means to you?” If you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community, then you know there are around 1 billion questions going through your head, and in terms of discovering yourself, things aren’t always clear.
A lot has changed since we met. We are two queer individuals who started this journey of documenting our lives together. Since the start, we’ve been able to grow a crazy supportive audience, a lot of them being a part of the LGBTQ+ community themselves. It is because of you guys and your visibility that we’re able to learn so much about our community. We have learned so much about the LGBTQ+ community in 2018 alone because of our social platforms. We’re able to witness so many queer people being loud, proud, and vocal. Honestly, it’s inspired us to not only seek more education about the LGBTQ+ community, but to be vocal within it. This is all thanks to Pride month.
So, what does Pride mean to us?
To us, Pride means acceptance. Our first Pride month together has made us feel more love and acceptance than ever before. Luckily, we are fortunate enough to have extremely supportive family and friends in our lives. But Pride month goes beyond that. To us, Pride means loving and accepting yourself and being proud of yourself. We’re proud of our ups and our downs. We’re proud of our journey and that we’re here. We’re proud because of the brave people who fought tirelessly for us to have this month of celebration. Although Pride month is simply one month, it’s a daily, weekly, monthly, and life-long battle against what society and other people expect from us. Pride month is a gigantic celebration and a reminder to be our authentic selves 100% of the time, no matter the day.
So, what’s next?
This month has taught us a lot. It has opened our eyes (no, not our third eye. We don’t have one of those — at least not quite yet). We want to continue our journey of growth and education. We want to be visible and vocal for those who can’t be visible or vocal yet. We want to be our own representation and to tell our stories and speak our truth. If our voices can help just one person, we’re on the right path.
That’s all for today folks!
Until next time,
Ariana & Hannah
