From the moment we wake up, we always try to be positive.
However, the reality is that that is not always the case. It’s hard to get up and get things done, and sometimes our days can feel like nothing but knocking off tasks on a to-do list. But honestly, having to get stuff done is reality. It takes up a lot of time! That being said, we’ve been talking a lot lately about small moments: little things throughout the day that make it feel like we’re enjoying our lives together. Stop-and-smell-the-roses type of stuff. For both of us, these things make a huge difference in turning our days around, and making us feel more positive if we’ve woken up on the wrong side of the bed.
We have a list.
We’ve made a list of small moments that make us feel closer to each other and generally more positive and joyful. These are things that we turn to when we’re not feeling so hot, and things that we just like to keep as a part of our days.
Without further ado, here they are!
1. Coffee & Tea Time
Morning coffee and evening tea are the bookends of our days. Every morning, we sit at our tiny kitchen table with our respective mugs and caffeinated beverages (black coffee for me, and a sweet Cappuccino for Ariana). We have a big corner window that we people watch from, and we talk about everything from what we dreamed about the night before to what we’re doing with our day. A lot of mornings, our laptops also accompany us, and we’ll respond to emails and write to-do lists while we talk.
Evening tea looks a lot different than morning coffee. By the time we have tea, we’re on the couch, exhausted by the day, and already well into watching TV. It’s usually one of the last things we do before bed, and we’ll drink decaf herbal tea while we’re curled up on our assigned sides of the couch.
Our favorite thing about these rituals is that they make us feel like we’re spending quality time. If we’re having coffee, its something to keep us at the table together, and to keep the morning from being consumed by work. And if we’re having tea, it usually comes with a break in our TV binge session where we talk, gossip, or vent about whatever’s on our minds. The act of making coffee and tea together, and then drinking it together, slows our day down and makes us appreciate both the beginning and the end of each day.
We live in a really cute neighborhood, so one of our favorite ways to enjoy it (other than people watching from our kitchen window) is going on walks. The summer that we moved into this apartment, we went on walks nearly every evening. At that time, Hannah was doing behavioral therapy, and I spent a lot more days at the office. So walks were a way that we spent quality time unpacking our days and relaxing.
Now, walks are still a way we relax, but they also provide us a time to be unplugged and focused on each other’s conversation. We also use them as a time to dream about the future, and appreciate our surroundings. Other topics outside of ourselves also come up often. For some reason, walking aimlessly around our neighborhood really opens up our minds, and we have really great conversations. This is one of our favorite recurring moments together.
3. Cooking Together
So, I love to do this thing where I suggest what we should eat for dinner, but I don’t cook. I don’t cook for multiple reasons: insecurity in the kitchen, feeling overwhelmed by the cooking process, and just not liking it. But I’ve found cooking with Hannah to be therapeutic in some ways. Instead of me browsing Pinterest for recipes and then suggesting, I browse, suggest, and then I offer to help Hannah make the recipe so that we can spend time together working on something specific. What we like about cooking together is how we come together. We have different things to offer, even in the kitchen, so it makes cooking together that much more fun. We’ve even started baking together, even though I still get nervous from time to time. (who else get stressed in the kitchen?) It’s one of our favorite things to do together!
4. Movie Nights
Ariana loves movies. Seriously she loves Hallmark movies, Disney channel movies, and just about any teenage drama movie. Don’t ask me why, I can’t answer that. One of the things we have grown to love is random movie nights in. We browse movies on all of the most popular streaming channels including Netflix, Hulu, and Prime. Although it’s the least exciting part, we even enjoy the process of trying to find a movie to watch. We enjoy bouncing movie options off of each other and then settling on an option. It’s a whole process – we’re sure you guys know the deal.
Lately, we’ve been marathoning all the latest gay movies like Call Me By Your Name, Alex Strangelove, and Love, Simon. If anyone has any good recommendations, we’re all ears!
Well, that’s about all of them.
Those are the main moments that make our days brighter and better spent. We always stay grateful for the small ways that we can spend quality time together. We’re always trying to come up with more ways to do just that! What are some of the small moments that make y’all’s days better? Let us know in the comments!
Until next time,
Ariana & Hannah
